Quick Guide To Méribel
Méribel is well known all over the world for its beautiful traditional village feel combined with its now unbeatable links to the 600km of pistes in the Trois Vallées, making it a attractive choice for skiers and snowboarders.
The resort itself was founded by a British skier back in 1938 and starts at 1600m, since then the village has sprawled up and across the valley. The resort almost splits into smaller areas because of the steep terrain it sits on. Other areas that can be reached easily by shuttle or gondola include Brides les Bains situated at 600m, Les Allues at 1,200m and Méribel Village 1,400m. Just above the main village you will also find the slightly higher purpose built resort of Mottaret.
There are a variety of accommodation options in Méribel, although the majority are luxury chalets, there are self catered and good value hotel options available too.
In terms of the skiing on offer, Méribel has been subject to numerous lift system updates in the past 10 years, making access to the area unbeatable. What’s more is the enormous quantity of off-piste available between groomed runs, so be sure to book a guide and be well trained in using all your avalanche gear if you want to explore safely.
The terrain is a paradise for intermediate and expert skiers with lots of red and black pistes at your finger tips, that’s not to say it is not suitable for learners as there are still plenty of green runs that link across the valley too. For those gravitating toward the park, just above Mottaret the Area 43 park is largely hyped as one of Europe’s best snowparks. With gigantic half pipes and a big air zone, it’s worth heading down even just to watch some of the adventurous locals tear up the terrain. With a snowmaking system second to none and pistes as high as 3,000m Meribel offers a great set up for any ski holiday.
There are numerous bakery’s, fromageries in the village offering top notch local delicacies and well as an extensive selection of shops, and restaurants. Coupled with the resorts great skiing and snowboarding, its no doubt why Meribel is a top pick for many.
