Quick Guide to Saint Gervais
The resort of St Gervais forms part of the Mont Blanc Evasions ski pass in the French Alps. It has approximately 445km of skiable terrain and is historically a spa town with its fame coming from its healing waters and thermal baths. It is rich in culture with visitors exploring the ski resort all year round for the spa’s, skiing and hiking on offer.
The skiing in the resort is also well linked to Les Houches with the historic and famous rack and pinion ‘Mont Blanc Tramway’ taking you up to the Les Houches ski area, you’ll need a separate ski pass (the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass instead of the Mont Blanc Evasion pass) for this but it adds another 55km of runs to your already generous pass.
The Evasion Mont Banc pass covers you in the following ski resort - St Gervais, St Nicolas, Mont Joly (which is one of the highest areas at 2525m) and Mont d’Arbois, Megève’s Alpette, Côte 2000, Cordon, La Giettaz and Combloux –plenty to do here then!
The ski area is well connected, with plenty of variety for all levels. You can venture south to explore the neighbouring villages of St Nicholas de Veroce and Les Contamines-Mont Joie both offering great views of Mont Blanc as well as tree lined runs that you can use to escape any inclement weather or visibility issues. The level of skiing lends itself to beginners and intermediates but if you are looking for a challenge then there is also plenty of challenging off piste and freeride to be explored, a guide is needed, but popular routes include runs all the way from the Prarion in Les Huches back down to Saint Gervais as a favourite amongst explorers as well as and in the ‘Magic Garden’ of the back of Mont d’Arbois and Mont Joux accessible between the Radaz and Lanchettes and lifts on Côte 2000. There are also 3 freestyle parks in the area with kickers, table tops and half pipes.
The pretty town is littered with typical Savoyard sights, such as its cobbled streets, river side location, pretty church and ice skating rink. There are also a fantastic selections of shops and cute boutiques to keep the shoppers of your group happy. Further up the valley is Megève; although its reputation is more glamorous both Megève and Saint Gervais share a certain air of superiority, with 5 star hotels and top restaurants available to its visitors.
Returning visitors brag about the resorts peacefulness in comparison to the ski worlds giants, Saint Gervais remains quite unspoilt by tourism and you won’t often find que in this resort, even during high season - it’s the hidden treasure of the Alps.
