Quick Guide to Flaine
Flaine is a purpose built ski resort well linked with other resorts in the Grand Massif, with a ski pass covering Les Carroz, Sixt, Samoens and Morillon. Although some may see the architecture as less appealing than a traditional Savoyarde style ski town, you cannot deny Flaine as convenient for its guests, with easy access to several key lifts from the larger accommodation apartments and an easy to navigate layout.
Many of Flaine’s accommodation options are self-catered apartments and chalets which make it incredibly good value even during peak season. However you can find some more varied accommodation in the village ‘Hameau de Flaine’ where you will spot the colourful Scandinavian style chalets.
Visitors have 265km of piste at their feet to explore and with an efficient lift system on offer they won’t find it difficult to discover this fantastic ski area.
The skiing in Flaine is excellent, skiers and snowboards a like will have variety of terrain parks, many gather at the ‘Ze Forest’ which has an interesting combination of off-piste terrain as well as features for freestyle addicts to enjoy.
The most well known area in Flaine has got to be the Tete de Lindars: take the lift to the very top of the resort (2560m) and on the chair up you’ll notice a huge array of marked off-pistes runs through rolling bowls and more challenging chutes, that then joins back to the main resort pistes, a perfect place to explore the off-piste and good for intermediate or advanced skiers. Another highly recommended run would the Pistes de Cascades, 14km long and excellent views of Mont Blanc from the top, dropping down, its gradual line through trees makes it a very picturesque route down the valley.
For beginners and learners there are actually four free lifts, meaning you can get to grips with things without having to pay for a lift pass! There are also plenty of ski and snowboarding schools to choose from should you want to improve your skills.
The village itself is set across 3 areas, Flaine Foret the highest of all at 1700m, Flaine Forum at 1600m and Flaine Front de Neige at 1500m. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars both on piste and in the village, we would recommend Le Bissac being a favourite and Le Michet, a quaint shepherds hut and one of the oldest buildings in Flaine.
Flaine is perhaps not the best resort for those not wanting to take part in the skiing side of things (with less boutique style shopping available than other ski resorts) but plenty of activities such as dog sledding, cinema, bowling and swimming and spa facilities at Résidence Le Centaure or Flaine Montsoleil Les Terraces d’Eos.
Flaine is a great all round resort with some incredible skiable terrain, coupled with its accessibility from Geneva airport and convenient layout, it has become a very popular resort for all the right reasons.
