Quick Guide to Courmayeur
Located at the foot of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur needs little introduction, with incredible skiing on offer, a traditional village with cobbled streets lined with local Italian deli’s and antique stores, Courmayeur is a popular ski holiday destination for all the right reasons.
You can get various ski passes depending on how much terrain you wish to explore with many opting to go for the larger pass that allows you to ski in the areas of Breuil-Cervinia, Crévacol, Etroubles, Pila and Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses.
For beginner and intermediates, head to the Chécrouit - Val Veny where you’ll find the rolling gentle and well groomed pistes, nearby the off piste is also highly regarded but those seeking more of the steep terrain tend to focus their time on the Mont Blanc side taking you over to Chamonix and Argentiere. The off piste in the area is also not to be missed, including the famous 24km Vallée Blanche, reached via the Punta Helbronner at 3,466m allowing you to test out the new rotating ‘Skyway’ lift on the way up.
Courmayeur is also a well noted Heli Ski centre which allows you to reach those places other do not, a guide is a must but the experience is once in a life time.
There is a terrain park in Courmayeur (although they were one of the last big resorts in the Alps to catch on to this trend!) located at Aretu Area at 2000m, it features an air bag and plenty of rails and kickers.
Courmayeur has a solid snow fall record and while it is rather close to Chamonix the weather front can be very different, its off piste is world famous, making it no surprise then, that the Swatch Freeride World Tour makes a stop in this resort.
For time off the mountains, Courmayeur does a great Après ski, with the main strip lined with bars for you to enjoy as and if you manage to last long enough the resort even has its own night club.
Being close to other major Italian cities means the weekend skiing and the night life gets even more lively on the weekends.
Courmayer is a fantastic spot for foodies, with a huge array of restaurants offering superb local cuisines and great value Italian wines, it’s is no wonder why world famous chef Heston Blumenthal host the event of the season the ‘Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience’ where Michelin star chefs gather to show off their skills using local produce.
Courmayeur remains unspoiled and un-crowded most of the year round, with many just visit for long weekends. We can understand why it’s charm continues to bring holiday makers from all over the world
